- My Story
My Name is Elaine Oliver. I am a Qualified Kinesiologist, GAPS practitioner and Hypnotherapist.
In my early 20’s I fulfilled my dream of travelling the world and it was such a wonderful time in my life. The only downside was that a nasty parasite hitched a ride with me in India and came along for the rest of my travels.
A course of heavy antibiotics followed and so did a decline in my health. I had digestive issues for years (also due to bad eating habits and too much alcohol at that time), developed Candida and went on the Anti-Candida diet. This restrictive diet did help, but after a while I went back to my poor eating habits. My gut became inflamed, and this, together with work and relationship stress meant I went on to develop IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
I was diagnosed with depression. I was exhausted and my body ached. I felt terrible all the time.
That’s when I decided - 13 years after picking up the parasite - that I couldn’t carry on living like this. I started studying Nutrition to better understand my condition. I left my corporate job and went on to study Kinesiology, Hypnotherapy and I eventually became a GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) practitioner.
Throughout this time I changed my eating habits, tackled stress, and eliminated negative thought patterns with Kinesiology, which really helped. But it wasn’t until I started incorporating milk kefir and then other fermented foods into my diet that things really changed and this time the improvements lasted.
For years now, I have been free from depression. My IBS symptoms have disappeared, I have energy and a relaxed, happy body.
In 2012 I decided to start this website as I had struggled to find kefir starter cultures in those days and thought other people might be trying to source them too. With the recent explosion in interest by scientists and the general public in the importance of a balanced gut, they are now far more available, luckily!
My passion for the digestive system and loving and nurturing its environment has grown! I give weekly fermented food and nutrition workshops at a yoga retreat and see clients in 2 clinics in Sydney.
I want this website to continue to be a place for you to get everything you need so you can start fermenting, while also bringing you up to date information, recipes and research.
